UNIQUE RADICAL SR8 RX COMPETITION CAR JOINS AUSTRALIAN SERIES IN 2013
18 July 2012

THE ULTIMATE RADICAL racer will join the Radical Australia Cup (RAC) in 2013 in a unique configuration designed especially for competition in Australia – the ‘SR8 RX Competition Car’. The Radical SR8 RX Competition Car was officially launched to the Australian market at the weekend and will become eligible alongside the existing SR3 RS Cup Cars in the RAC for the 2013 season. The car will also be eligible for competition in the Victorian Supersports championship, with work underway to allow its inclusion in other state-level competition, including the NSW state series, as well.

The car is already the staple of the Radical European Masters series, where it races amongst combined grids of SR8 and SR3 models, as it will do in Australia.

Powered by a 2.7 Litre V8 developed by Radical Performance Engines, the SR8 RX Competition Car produces 430BHP and revs out to more than 10,000 RPM. The car features a six-speed paddle-shift gearbox that ex-Formula 1 racer Alex Yoong said was ‘The best gear change I’ve driven outside of F1’.

The SR8 RX Competition cars unique features include hot climate cooling technology, a nose cone configuration not used anywhere else in the world in the SR8, key upgrades to make the car reach optimum performance levels on Australian circuits. But most noticeable to the untrained eye is a special twin pipe exhaust, helping the V8 to produce an incredible tune.

The car was demonstrated for media and Radical Australia competitors at Sydney Motorsport Park at the weekend; Radical Australia’s Team Manager and winning driver Garth Walden and Dunlop V8 Supercar ace George Miedecke putting the car through its paces on Friday.

With limited running, Walden clocked a stunning 1m25-second lap on the 3.9km circuit with the potential of much more to come. The car reached more than 265km/hr on the Sydney Motorsport Park main straight, maintains a minimum corner speed through turn one of 245kph and can accelerate from 0-100km/hr in 2.7 seconds. As with the SR3 Cup Cars, Radical Australia has constructed a special introductory package unique to the local market, with competitors able to step into the SR8 RX Competition Car from $177,000 (+GST) – a significant saving over the full price.

Radical Australia has also announced the formation of an Australian-arm of Radical Performance Engines to better locally support competitors. RPE will be in place locally to dramatically lower the cost of engine rebuilds and offer service and support for not only SR8 owners, but also any motorcycle-powered racing car competing locally.

Operational bases outside of the Sydney market, particularly in Melbourne, are also currently being investigated to increase customer service for racing and track days.

Radical Australia is also currently in discussions with the Australian Grand Prix Corporation to become a support category at the 2013 Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix, and is investigating opportunities to run at the Mount Panorama, Bathurst, circuit next year.

The recent introduction of Formula 3 cars at Bathurst will likely ease the transition for Radical to also compete at the famous circuit for the first time.

“The SR8 RX Competition Car represents a fairly major step forward for Radical in Australia, but the time is right to continue to grow the brand and expand the series,” Radical Australia’s Greg Smith said.

“The SR8 RX Competition Car is an incredible product and was impressive to watch at speed. In every aspect; sight, sound, performance and more it is a step forward from the already incredible SR3 RS Cup Car, and a combined grid in the 2013 Radical Australia Cup will be a sight to behold.

“We are in the process of investigating further opportunities to give Radical customers opportunities to race at new or high profile events. As a category we now average more than 20 cars per round, which makes us a safe bet to put on a great show wherever we race. During our feature race at Sydney Motorsport Park on Sunday, 16 of 21 drivers posted a fastest lap of 1min 31s – that’s 16 drivers all within a second of each other, quite extraordinary.

“Bringing the SR8 RX Competition to Albert Park and potentially to Bathurst would be a great way to welcome the car to Australia”.
