Shell Racing Solutions Radical Masters & Intrax Radical Benelux Cup: Spa-Francorchamps, 05/06 May
08 May 2011

Shell Racing Solutions Radical Masters and Intrax Radical Benelux Cup competitors have been enjoying the sunshine at Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium, despite the cancellation of Race 2 in circumstances beyond Radical’s control.
Qualifying took place on Thursday, with Team Solutions Racing’s Per Staaf Jnr setting the pole for Race 1 with a time of 2:19.489. Sitting alongside Staaf on the front row was the Slim Racing pairing of Christian Kronegard and William Vermont, with Radical veterans Terrence Woodward and Manhal Allos forming the second row. Fastest Supersports Class driver was Radical newcomer, ex-Indy Lights driver Junior Strous.

With the lights going green on Race 1, all drivers came through the La Source hairpin cleanly. David Jacobs left the track at Eau Rouge however, leading to a five-lap safety car period, after which the pit window opened. Staaf maintained his lead through the pit window, with Woodward/Johnston also holding second, whilst behind, Radical Australia’s Garth Walden was swiftly moving up the order, and by the second half of the race was chasing Vermont for third.

Minor damage to Staaf’s car on-track was slowing his pace however, and by lap 12, Vermont had taken the lead, with Johnston and Walden promoted to second and third respectively. At the flag, Vermont took the win by 30 seconds, with Walden just pipping Johnston at the end, a great finish in his first Radical Masters race. With Johnston third, Shaun Balfe closely missed out on a podium place, only four-tenths adrift at the race finish. The first Supersports team home was UKRacing’s Andrea Fausti/Lorenzo Scotti, with Coronel Racing’s Bertus Sanders/Marc Koster second in class on their Masters debut.

Race 2 of the weekend was unfortunately cancelled at short notice after the Oak Racing LMP2 car of Matthieu Lahaye crashed heavily at Pouhon during LMS qualifying, necessitating lengthy barrier repairs. The 360 Racing duo of John Stanley and James Swift had set the fastest time for Race 2 qualifying, Swift setting the fastest lap time of the weekend at 2:16.414.
