Radical Victoria Cup Round 2 - Supersports from Sandown Raceway
30 June 2012

Radical Australia came away victorious from a first visit to Sandown Raceway in mid June, with a top 3 finish in the first Supersports event to be held at the bumpy Melbourne circuit. Bryce Moore emerged the eventual winner in tricky conditions, followed by Rob Baird and Greg Smith is a close battle for second place.

Winter is always a tricky time to race in Victoria, for the second round of the Radical Victoria Cup at Sandown Raceway there were two major obstacles to overcome for cars that live on grip. Both temperature and moisture were thrown into the mix and provided an additional challenge for all competitors, as this was a mixed Supersports category round.

Saturday saw chilly and fickle conditions with practice red flagged early, most competitors having completed only three or four laps. Race one was delayed as a power outage took down circuit timing and by the time the power issues were sorted the days only rain shower was lurking around the circuits fringes. As the thirteen Radicals and two Wests took to the circuit various corners of the track received different measures of rain. Before long there were a number of cars that had speared off circuit which saw the safety car deployed. Although most cars got mobile again the session was red flagged after only a couple of laps with no results issued.

Sunday and the Supersports were first cabs off the rank at 9.15am. Sensibly most competitors headed out on track sporting wets to combat the cool and damp conditions. The race started with Aaron Steer bolting in his West with Mark Laucke and Garth Walden in hot pursuit. Next up came Bryce Moore and a fast starting Robert Baird. Further back a great battle pack developed with Richard Bloomfield, Greg Smith, Chris Stern, Dane Stokes and Gary Walker all fighting over track space. Four laps in the race was red flagged with Graham Smith’s Radical parked facing the wrong way on the outside of turn nine, with rear wing askew.

As the third race rolled around many of the Supersports headed to the dummy grid with wets on. A number of cars headed back to the pits and bolted on slicks as the weather was obviously improving. At the start the Wests of Steer and Laucke led the field away as Baird broke into wheel spin and dropped from fifth to eighth. Steer immediately ran wide into turn 1 and dropped back to fourth, before Walden passed Laucke for the lead into turn three. By the end of lap one Laucke had retaken the lead with Walden charging close behind.

The battle for fifth was well and truly on with Bloomfield, Greg Smith, Nick Kelly, Baird, Stern and Stokes all storming around in close company. Stern put two wheels off at Dandenong Road and fell into the clutches of the chasing trio of Greg Smith, Kosta Pohorukov and Walker. Baird continued his progress forward after some amazingly close racing with Kelly and Bloomfield.

At the front Walden and Laucke tangled, whilst Steer developed gear selection problems with the pole sitting West stuck in third. With the top 3 all sidelined, Bryce Moore emerged in the lead with a significant gap back to Robert Baird and Greg Smith, with Richard Bloomfield fourth. This is how the race ended with Moore taking the win ahead of a close battle for second seeing Baird and Smith separated by just over half a second after both had made significant progress through the field. Bloomfield was not far away in fourth with Kelly and Kleo Mandikos finishing a strong sixth in his first Radical outing.

It was an action packed way to end the first weekend of Supersports racing in Victoria, with Radicals coming to the fore and proving the competitiveness of this newly instigated Supersports class.
