Radical Clubman Cup: Round 2 - Wakefield Park
20 April 2011

Bloomfield takes out 1st place in Round 2 of the Radical Clubman Cup!
Round Two of the 2011 Radical Clubman Cup was part of the SuperSports category in the 2011 NSW Motor Racing Championship.  This round saw a field of nine Radicals entered at Wakefield Park Raceway, the venue which two weeks previously hosted Round One of the Radical Australia Cup as part of the Shannon's Nationals series.  The weather was cold and windy at times but dry, unlike Sydney which had one of the wettest April days for sometime on Saturday.

Once again it was Michael Shaw who took pole, this time by 0.95 of a second from Richard Bloomfield with Greg Smith third.  Everyone had up to twenty laps to setup their cars and set a qualifying time.

In race one over twenty laps on Saturday afternoon, Shaw charged off from the start line to win by nearly 6 seconds.  It was behind him where Bloomfield and Phil Anseline fought it out for the minor places, with Bloomfield loosing second place for two laps, only to fight back to cross the line 24 seconds ahead of Anseline.  Everyone except Gordon Mellis, who pulled out on lap ten with a hand injury, finished the race.

In race two, Shaw once again had a great start, only to go wide at the fish hook, meaning he crossed the line on lap one in last place.  Bloomfield and Anseline fought it out up front for the first half of the race, while Shaw scythed his way back through the field to charge back into contention.  It went all wrong on lap 12 for Bloomfield as he went wide at turn two, to allow Shaw back into the lead and the eventual chequered flag.  Bloomfield managed to cross the line by less than half a second to Anseline with Greg Smith grabbing a well-deserved fourth place.  Peter Johnston and Sue Hughes filled the next two spots, just a half-car length separating them over the line.

Race three saw Shaw get off the line well - actually too well, as he was deemed to have jumped the start.  However, he later suffered a broken rear axle and sat out of the rest of the race at the fish hook.  This left Bloomfield in front, although he didn't have it easy as both a rejuvenated Smith and Anseline worked hard to stay with him for the 18 laps.  Anseline had an off on lap 12 to drop to the back of the field, which allowed fast-improving rookie Steve Shelley to move into third place, 7 seconds behind the leaders.  Smith also worked harder from lap twelve pushing Bloomfield all the way to the flag to grab second spot, with Bloomfield crossing the line less than half a second ahead.  In a fine fourth spot was first-ever Radical racer Peter Johnston, who simply got faster and faster as he acclimatised with the car.  George Davis had a very consistent day, wrapping up seventh place in the last race, and later opining he had not ever done so many contiguous laps at Wakefield!

The Radical Australia MoComm Driver Excellence Award went to Sue Hughes who consistently improved across the weekend.

Overall podium points from the weekend saw Richard Bloomfield with 41 points, Greg Smith on 35 and Michael Shaw with 34 points.
